The Sydney Credit Union Charitable Foundation is a community-focused granting body created by Sydney Credit Union in 2010 to mark the cooperative’s 75th anniversary. Operating within the geographical catchment area served by Sydney Credit Union, and in Cape Breton rural communities without an existing credit union, the foundation provides financial and in‑kind support to eligible organizations. Its mandate is to enhance quality of life through the advancement of community health, financial literacy and environmental protection.
The foundation supports projects and initiatives led by registered charities, non-profits, cooperatives, social enterprises and community organizations. To qualify, applicants must align with at least one of the foundation’s core values: offering education and workshops that improve financial literacy, advancing community health, or preserving and protecting the environment. Funded activities are expected to benefit residents in the credit union’s service region and may range from events and programs to capital or infrastructure projects.
Applications are assessed using a two‑stage evaluation framework. First, organizations must meet minimum mandatory criteria related to location, alignment with core values or charitable status, and submission of key documents such as recent financial statements and a clear project budget. Requests that pass this threshold are scored using a points-based system that considers the depth of the relationship with Sydney Credit Union, the number of core values addressed, the number of people reached, project sustainability, support for diverse groups, and the ability of the foundation’s contribution to leverage additional funding. A final subjective category allows reviewers to recognize special regional circumstances.
Prospective recipients are invited to review the published Funding Evaluation Criteria and complete the Sydney Credit Union Charitable Foundation Community Application Form. The form captures details such as organizational status, amount requested, purpose of the project, timing, expected number of participants and opportunities for public recognition. Depending on the size of the request, financial statements may be required. Successful applicants are asked to provide a written report on the results of the supported activity and may be invited to present outcomes at a Sydney Credit Union meeting, reinforcing transparency and accountability for granted funds.
