Sask Sport Inc. is a volunteer-led, non-profit organization that serves as the provincial federation for amateur sport in Saskatchewan. Since 1972, it has coordinated province-wide programs and services that strengthen the amateur sport system and enrich communities. Sask Sport represents dozens of provincial and multi-sport organizations and districts, collectively engaging hundreds of thousands of registered participants across the province.
Role in the funding ecosystem
A central mandate of Sask Sport is to administer funding through the sport section of the Sask Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation. Proceeds from lottery ticket sales in Saskatchewan are directed, via this trust, to eligible sport, culture and recreation groups. Sask Sport works in partnership with SaskCulture and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association to ensure these lottery revenues are distributed to provincial and community organizations, as well as through the Sask Lotteries Community Grant Program and regional sport, culture and recreation districts.
Funding is primarily channeled through eligible Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs). Individuals, teams and clubs that belong to their PSO are typically supported through that organization’s programs, services and grant streams. With resources from the trust fund, Sask Sport offers grants that help member organizations with operations, development initiatives and targeted projects.
Programs, grants and target groups
Beyond core annual funding for member organizations, Sask Sport supports a range of program areas that are often backed by its grant mechanisms. These include adaptive sport initiatives that assist with club development and equipment purchases, Indigenous sport development across all levels of competition, and broad sport development efforts aimed at increasing participation and organizational capacity. The organization also invests in sport safety, respect in sport training, and safe sport resources to ensure healthy, inclusive and abuse-free environments.
Through its funding and program portfolio, Sask Sport’s grants focus on amateur sport groups, coaches and officials, and community-based clubs that are part of the lottery-funded system. Its activities are documented through detailed annual reports, which provide accountability for the significant public funds distributed to sport organizations each year.
Mission and impact
Sask Sport’s promise is to enrich Saskatchewan communities by fostering accessible sport opportunities for residents of all cultures, backgrounds, ages and abilities. Guided by values of integrity, teamwork, inclusivity and community, the organization uses lottery-generated funding to build a strong, province-wide sport network. By coupling financial assistance with education, safety resources and administrative services, Sask Sport helps sustain a vibrant amateur sport ecosystem that benefits participants, volunteers and organizations alike.
