Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) is a Canadian federal agency established in 2015 under the Canadian High Arctic Research Station Act. With its headquarters at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, POLAR plays a pivotal role in advancing Canada’s knowledge of the Arctic—and even the Antarctic—through scientific research, collaboration, and knowledge mobilization.
Its core mandate includes:
- Enhancing Indigenous and local community engagement in Arctic research
- Supporting the development and dissemination of polar science and technology
- Strengthening Canada’s position as a circumpolar leader
- Operating CHARS as an international hub for Arctic innovation
POLAR undertakes this through its Science and Technology Program, which offers funding for research projects, fellowships, and student awards, including the Northern Scientific Training Program and doctoral scholarships. These initiatives aim to build northern capacity in STEM and empower Inuit and Northern youth.
Guided by its 2020–2025 Science and Technology Framework, POLAR focuses on three key goals:
- Enhancing understanding of Arctic ecosystems amid climate change
- Exploring the intersection between environmental health and community wellness
- Developing sustainable energy, infrastructure, and technology adapted to Northern realities
As Canada approaches POLAR’s 10th anniversary in 2025, the organization continues to amplify Indigenous-led science, strengthen national and international partnerships, and broaden public awareness of Arctic issues through research, outreach, and exhibitions.
POLAR’s vision—a sustainable future informed by knowledge and collaboration—carries Canada’s Arctic leadership forward, rooted in partnerships, respected Indigenous knowledge, and world-class research infrastructure.
