Optech is a college-based applied research center specializing in optics, photonics and quantum technologies. Established in 2002, it was created under the joint mandate of Cégep André-Laurendeau, Cégep de La Pocatière and John Abbott College to serve as Quebec’s hub for innovation in optical-photonic technologies. Optech’s mission is to help companies identify and develop industrial solutions using applied optics and photonics, and to promote the adoption of these enabling technologies in order to boost productivity and innovation within Quebec’s industries.
As an applied research center, Optech provides end-to-end support to businesses throughout their R&D projects, from initial feasibility studies and design to prototyping, testing, validation in real-world conditions, and even limited pilot production. The organization’s technological expertise spans five major domains – optical fibers, illumination and imaging, optical metrology, photonic microsystems, and artificial intelligence in optics – a cross-disciplinary skillset that allows Optech to address the diverse needs of innovative companies in sectors such as medical technology, energy, industrial manufacturing, quantum technologies, and environmental applications. With a highly skilled team boasting industrial experience, Optech approaches each project with a practical understanding of its partner companies’ economic and manufacturing realities, ensuring that the solutions developed are not only technically innovative but also viable in real-world production.
