Role in the Funding Ecosystem
The MacMillan Family Foundation plays a significant role as a private philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting organizations that strengthen and enrich society. Founded in 2003, it focuses on high-impact funding in cancer and medical research, education, and the arts, with additional community-based granting through its local grants program.
Program Areas
Cancer and Medical Research: The foundation funds educational and research institutions and programs to help scientists study causes of and cures for cancer. It supports programs and initiatives advancing health equity, believing that private funding is critical where public funding is unavailable or insufficient.
Education: The foundation focuses on improving student outcomes in under-resourced communities in New York City and New Jersey. Priorities include strengthening community schools in partnership with community-based organizations, building capacity of school leaders and early childhood educators, and improving literacy in young people.
Arts: The foundation funds infrastructure and capacity-building projects with the long-term goal of increased organizational sustainability and a thriving arts community. Current programs also include arts education for young people.
Application Process
The foundation does not accept unsolicited applications. Organizations with programs aligned with the foundation's goals may submit a brief survey for consideration. Reviews are conducted on a rolling basis. Previous grantees should contact their current foundation contact.
