Role in the Funding Ecosystem
The McCall MacBain Scholarships represent one of Canada's most comprehensive leadership-driven scholarship programs for graduate studies. Established in 2019 through a landmark $200 million gift—the largest ever for graduate-level scholarships in Canada—the program identifies and supports exceptional students who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to positive change.
Funding Components
Each scholarship covers: full tuition and fees for the full normal duration of the master's or professional program; a living stipend of $2,300 CAD per month during academic terms; a one-time relocation grant for moving to Montreal; and beginner to advanced French language courses through McGill. Scholars not enrolled during summer terms may apply for up to $5,000 for meaningful summer initiatives.
Awards Structure
The program offers multiple award levels: up to 20 McCall MacBain Scholarships for Canadian applicants and 10 for international students annually; Finalist Awards of $10,000 (Canadian) or $20,000 (international); and Regional Awards of $5,000 (Canadian) or $10,000 (international) tenable at any public Canadian university.
Leadership Development Program
Beyond financial support, scholars participate in an intensive interdisciplinary leadership curriculum including annual summer retreats, bi-weekly seminars, field trips, and workshops on topics such as strategic planning, crisis communication, and public speaking. Second-year scholars travel to other parts of Quebec or Canada for place-based learning experiences.
Mentorship Network
Every scholar is matched with an experienced mentor, an executive coach, and advisors. Since 2021, over 100 leaders from fields including business, education, entrepreneurship, healthcare, law, and public policy have served as mentors.
