Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Langley School District Foundation (LSDF)

Langley School District Foundation (LSDF) is an independent, registered charity that exists solely to support students in the Langley, British Columbia public school district. Established in 2001, the Foundation supplements publicly funded education by raising private and community donations and then channeling those resources directly back into schools, classrooms, and individual learners. According to the Foundation, 90% of all donations are directed to programs that benefit students, with a focus on removing barriers so every learner can reach their full educational potential.

LSDF operates across several strategic funding areas: student mental wellness, literacy in its many forms, unique student opportunities such as leadership, civic engagement and extracurricular experiences, and extensive food programming to combat student hunger. The Food for Thought Campaign, breakfast clubs, snack programs and weekend backpack initiatives ensure that thousands of children have reliable access to nutritious food during school days and over weekends and holidays. These efforts are delivered in partnership with community organizations, faith groups, service clubs and municipal fire services.

A core funding role of the Foundation is the administration of more than 300 scholarships, bursaries and student awards each year on behalf of PACs, families, businesses, foundations and community partners. LSDF works closely with high school counsellors to select recipients, holds awards in trust for up to two years after graduation, and issues cheques once students provide proof of post-secondary or trades registration. The portfolio includes endowed funds that generate ongoing awards and annually sponsored scholarships targeted to academic merit, financial need, civic service, athletics, fine arts, trades, business, STEM, nursing, and other fields.

Funding from LSDF primarily benefits K‑12 students in all Langley public schools, with some programs also supporting families and early learners. Mental wellness grants help students access private counselling where cost is a barrier and support initiatives such as youth mental health summits. Literacy investments range from early years programs like “Talk with Me, Play with Me, Learn with Me” to summer book giveaways aimed at closing reading achievement gaps. Student opportunity funds back dry grad events, innovation challenges like the IDEA Series, global education projects such as PA‑MOJA, and other experiences that are not typically financed through core Ministry of Education budgets.

The Foundation collaborates with a wide network of partners including Breakfast Club of Canada, Starfish Pack programs, Backpack Buddies, the Township of Langley Firefighters Charity, churches, Rotary clubs, municipal governments and private foundations. These relationships expand LSDF’s capacity to deliver food security initiatives and other supports at scale. The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and managed by professional staff, publishes annual impact and financial reports, and emphasizes transparency by highlighting major donors and a lifetime giving circle. Through this blended model of fundraising, grantmaking and program delivery, LSDF plays a central role in mobilizing community resources to improve educational outcomes for Langley students.
