Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada is a national charitable foundation dedicated to advancing equitable access to education and research for Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning and plus (2SLGBTQIA+), as well as queer, trans, Black, Indigenous and people of colour (QTBIPOC) communities. Originating in the 1980s as a community networking group in Ottawa, it has evolved into a grantmaking body that channels donor funds into scholarships, awards and bursaries administered through universities and a secondary school across Canada.

The foundation focuses on research and study in arts, social sciences and STEM, with a strong emphasis on 2SLGBTQIA+ and QTBIPOC topics. Its Lambda Awards & Scholarships portfolio includes numerous named funds such as awards at Carleton University, Concordia University, the University of Guelph, Université de Montréal, the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia, the University of Manitoba, the University of New Brunswick, the University of Ottawa, the University of Victoria and Gulf Islands Secondary School, among others. These programs typically support students and researchers whose work advances understanding of queer and trans communities and combats systemic oppression.

Lambda targets postsecondary learners, graduate students, and researchers who identify with, or focus their work on, 2SLGBTQIA+ and QTBIPOC communities. Through its endowed and current-use awards, the foundation provides both recognition and financial assistance. Public impact summaries indicate that, cumulatively, Lambda has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to more than a hundred learners and scholars across scholarship and research categories, with at least a dozen award recipients supported in 2025 alone.

The organization also recognizes excellence beyond traditional scholarships, for example through a national Emerging 2SLGBTQ+ Francophone Writer Award, which offers a substantial monetary prize for emerging literary voices. Founded as the Lambda Business and Professional Group in the early 1980s, the organization initially raised funds informally for local causes related to the gay and lesbian community. It later became the Lambda Foundation for Excellence, known for the Wilde About Sappho literary fundraiser, and was incorporated as a non-profit in the early 1990s. In 2014, to distinguish itself from other entities and reflect its national scope, it adopted the current name Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada. Since then, the foundation has concentrated on building an endowed scholarship network and expanding partnerships with educational institutions nationwide.

While detailed selection criteria are typically administered by partner institutions, Lambda’s programs broadly favour academic excellence, leadership, and research relevance to queer and trans communities. University partners are responsible for adjudicating applications and selecting recipients, often using criteria such as quality of research proposals, impact on 2SLGBTQIA+ and QTBIPOC communities, and overall academic merit. Lambda manages and stewards the funds in accordance with agreements with each institution, ensuring that donor intent is respected.

According to its 2025–2030 strategic plan, Lambda aims to expand the number and diversity of scholarships and to introduce a Youth Scholarship Application Mentorship Program to help 2SLGBTQIA+ youth navigate scholarship and bursary applications. The plan emphasizes capacity-building through volunteers and a small staff team, deepening geographic reach, especially in regions like British Columbia, and strengthening partnerships with community foundations, government bodies and corporate donors. Technology integration and robust governance frameworks are highlighted as key drivers for scaling the foundation’s grantmaking impact.

Annual reports and impact updates provide transparency around funds raised, amounts awarded, number of recipients and new initiatives, demonstrating Lambda’s ongoing role as a cornerstone of 2SLGBTQIA+ and QTBIPOC educational funding in Canada.
