Role of the Harvey Sohi Foundation in the Funding Ecosystem
The Harvey Sohi Foundation is a memorial foundation established to perpetuate the values of its namesake: innovation, inclusion, community, and education. As a discretionary grant provider, the foundation directs its resources toward youth support services with a dual focus on educational advancement and basic needs support.
Funding Programs and Areas of Focus
The foundation operates two primary educational funding streams:
- Harvey Sohi Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding LA Matheson Secondary School graduates accepted into STEM programs at accredited universities. This scholarship recognizes well-rounded individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievements throughout their secondary education.
- Harvey Sohi Fund: An endowment established at the University of British Columbia that provides annual bursaries to civil engineering students facing financial hardship. The fund ensures ongoing support for students pursuing civil engineering, the field Harvey Sohi was studying before his passing.
In addition to educational funding, the foundation addresses immediate community needs through quarterly distribution of meals and care packages containing clothing, shoes, blankets, hygiene products, non-perishable food, and warm meals.
Target Audiences and Geographic Focus
The foundation primarily serves youth in British Columbia, with particular emphasis on students from LA Matheson Secondary School in Surrey and civil engineering students at UBC. Community support programs extend to individuals and families facing hardship throughout the greater BC region.
