The Coup de Balai Project
The Coup de Balai project is an annual financial aid of $5,000 granted by the GDG Foundation to a municipality or community organization in Quebec. It is designed to clean up areas polluted by human activity. Born from a successful pilot project in Sacré-Cœur in 2014, Coup de Balai now supports municipalities in restoring contaminated public spaces by removing waste, maintaining ecological integrity, minimizing contamination sources, and mobilizing local populations to raise pollution awareness.
Coup de Balai Highlights in 2023
Montcerf-Lytton
Located in the regional county municipality of La Vallée-de-la-Gatineau in Outaouais, Montcerf-Lytton aimed to organize a massive cleanup near their boat launch site, where ongoing illegal dumping directly affects the health of the Baskatong Reservoir. Local volunteers, including school children participating in educational workshops, supported the project and contributed to raising awareness about pollution’s impacts.
Aguanish
Because no project was funded in 2020 due to the pandemic, the GDG Foundation exceptionally funded a second project in 2023 in Aguanish, located in Minganie on the Côte-Nord. Their goal: clean up the annual festival site—a vibrant community and tourist gathering spot—and the nearby dunes, which suffer from illegal waste dumping by ATV users. The initiative combined cleanup with public awareness campaigns about the fragility of this unique natural environment.
