Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Franco-Albertan Foundation (FFA)

The Franco-Albertan Foundation (Fondation franco-albertaine) is a community foundation whose goal is to have a positive impact on the social, cultural and economic development of Alberta’s francophone community. It does this through philanthropy, primarily by creating and managing endowment funds and by operating several aid and scholarship programs. The interest generated by these endowed funds is distributed each year to support causes and beneficiaries designated by donors.

The Foundation pools donations into specific endowment funds that are never spent, ensuring a permanent capital base. Each year, a portion of the investment income (for example, 3.5% as indicated for some funds) is granted to targeted causes. Through its “Bourses et aide financière” and various “Programmes d’aide et bourses,” the Foundation provides financial support to francophone individuals and organizations in Alberta, including students, community groups, schools and charitable organizations offering services in French.

By working with a range of charitable organizations in different sectors, the Foundation encourages community engagement and helps address the evolving needs of the Francophonie in Calgary, Edmonton and other regions of the province. Its funding can support social, cultural, educational and community development initiatives aligned with its mission.

For the Foundation, the “francophonie albertaine” encompasses both organizations and institutions that offer services in French in Alberta, and francophone or French-speaking individuals who live in the province or identify with this community. Funding is therefore focused on this linguistic and cultural community, helping strengthen its autonomy, vitality and visibility over the long term.

The Franco-Albertan Foundation publishes annual community reports and audited financial statements, and it adopts a formal investment policy and transparency framework. Donors can see how funds are invested and how annual disbursements are made to recipients. The Foundation also offers information tools for donors, professionals, schools and organizations that hold endowment funds, helping them understand how grants and scholarships are managed and distributed.

By positioning itself as the guardian of donors’ generosity, the Foundation builds a lasting legacy for the francophone community in Alberta and provides a structured mechanism through which financial resources are transformed into recurring grants, bursaries and community support.
