Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Essex Region Conservation Foundation (ERCF)

The Essex Region Conservation Foundation (ERCF) is a registered public foundation dedicated to supporting environmental and heritage initiatives across the Windsor‑Essex‑Pelee Island region of Ontario. Established in 1977, ERCF raises, stewards, and strategically invests charitable donations from individuals, businesses and other foundations. Funds are then disbursed mainly to the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) and related partners to advance conservation, restoration and education projects.

The Foundation’s priorities, outlined in its strategic plan, include greening the region and taking climate action, connecting communities by trails, inspiring future generations through outdoor education, preserving regional heritage, and maintaining a responsible, sustainable and ethical foundation. Donor contributions enable large‑scale tree planting, wetland and prairie creation, Greenway trail expansion and access points, and capital improvements at key sites such as the John R. Park Homestead.

Through its fundraising, ERCF underpins a portfolio of grant and incentive programs administered by ERCA, notably the Clean Water~Green Spaces initiatives. These programs offer cost‑share grants to landowners for agricultural stewardship, habitat restoration and climate‑resilient practices, including cover crops, reduced tillage, buffer strips, wetland creation, and tree planting. Dedicated Habitat Restoration Grants can cover up to 90% of costs for tree and prairie projects and up to 100% for eligible wetland creation within ERCA’s watershed.

The Foundation also channels designated gifts to trail projects such as the Chrysler Canada Greenway and Cypher Systems Group Greenway, to community entrances and access infrastructure, and to outdoor education platforms like the Toldo Foundation Outdoor Classroom. Gratitude reports and audited financial statements document hundreds of thousands of dollars raised and granted annually to these projects.

ERCF offers multiple giving options: monthly giving, legacy gifts in wills, named benches and Greenway deeds, memorial tree planting, corporate “Partners in Sustainability” contributions, and targeted campaigns such as the restoration of the John R. Park Homestead. Several internally and externally restricted funds — including the Land Protection/Restoration Fund, Place for Life Fund, David & Margaret Reid Nature Fund and Jamieson Fund — ensure that donor intent is respected and provide enduring support for conservation and education projects.

The Foundation is accredited under Imagine Canada’s Standards Program and publishes audited financial statements, a complaints policy, and annual gratitude reports highlighting funded projects and partners. A volunteer board of directors oversees strategy and financial stewardship, while ERCA staff provide technical expertise and program delivery. This governance model gives donors confidence that their gifts are managed prudently and translated into measurable environmental and community benefits.
