Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Endow Manitoba

Endow Manitoba is a province‑wide initiative that works with Manitoba’s community foundations to strengthen local philanthropy and long‑term community funding. Hosted by The Winnipeg Foundation, it helps communities build permanent endowment funds whose investment income is used to support charities and projects year after year. By coordinating campaigns, promotional efforts and province‑wide funding initiatives, Endow Manitoba plays a central role in channeling resources to community foundations and, through them, to local organizations.

The initiative supports foundations in both urban and rural areas so they can provide stable grant funding for priorities such as community development, culture, recreation, the environment, social services and other locally defined needs. Instead of running a single program for individuals to apply to directly, Endow Manitoba focuses on enabling and amplifying the granting capacity of community foundations throughout Manitoba.

Endow Manitoba participates in and coordinates matching and challenge campaigns where partner funds are allocated to participating community foundations. Through these efforts, donations received during specified periods are partially matched, increasing the capital of local endowment funds. Over time, the investment income generated from these funds is granted out by each community foundation to eligible charities and community projects in its area.

In addition to challenge or matching initiatives, Endow Manitoba may collaborate with government and philanthropic partners on special funding efforts that strengthen the financial base of foundations serving small towns, rural municipalities and specific communities. This model effectively decentralizes grantmaking, ensuring that decisions about local grants are made close to the communities they affect.

Because Endow Manitoba works through community foundations, its impact spans a wide range of sectors: arts and culture, youth and education, health and social services, environmental initiatives, community infrastructure and more. Many small organizations and volunteer‑run groups benefit indirectly when their local foundation receives additional endowed capital or challenge funds that expand its annual granting budget.

Endow Manitoba’s support includes not only financial leverage but also capacity‑building, promotion of community philanthropy, and shared learning among foundations. This combination helps ensure that communities across Manitoba — including remote and rural areas — have enduring local funding sources to respond to emerging needs and invest in long‑term community well‑being.
