Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Crystal Gala Foundation

The Crystal Gala Foundation is a community-based charitable foundation focused on breast health and breast cancer care in British Columbia, particularly in the Fraser Valley region. Run by a volunteer committee since 1999, the foundation raises money through events and donations and redistributes these funds to hospitals, cancer centres and research initiatives. Its support is directed to equipment, technology and projects that enable early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Over time, the foundation has become a significant local funding partner, contributing more than $5.8 million. Major gifts have supported the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC), Langley Memorial Hospital and other regional facilities. In several cases, donations have been large enough to secure naming rights for specialized breast health units and diagnostic services, such as the Crystal Gala Breast Health Unit, Breast Health Centre and the Crystal Gala Diagnostic Mammography Unit.

The foundation primarily funds capital and clinical needs related to breast health. This includes the purchase of screening and diagnostic mammography machines, ultrasound equipment, tissue processors, PACS stations and other imaging and surgical tools such as a Neoprobe. It also supports the furnishing and fit-out of dedicated breast health centres to improve the care environment for patients.

In addition to equipment, the Crystal Gala Foundation has provided funding for research initiatives, such as the Breast Optical Probe Study at the BC Cancer Foundation. Earlier in its history, the organization directed funds to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Fraser Valley, BC/Yukon) and helped purchase early detection equipment and comfort supplies for several local hospitals.

The foundation operates as a discretionary funder rather than through formal open-call grant programs. Its volunteer committee assesses local needs in collaboration with medical staff and partner healthcare foundations, then commits multi-year pledges or one-time gifts for priority projects. Notable commitments include multiple $500,000 pledges to ARHCC and a $1,000,000 contribution toward a new MRI machine.

By focusing its resources on specialized equipment and infrastructure, the Crystal Gala Foundation aims to shorten wait times, improve diagnostic accuracy and provide more timely treatment for people living with or at risk of breast cancer. Its long-term partnerships with healthcare institutions and regional foundations help ensure funds remain in the local community while contributing to broader breast cancer care and research efforts.
