Cree Hunters Economic Security Board What is the Cree Hunters Economic Security Program? The Cree Hunters Economic Security Program is a family program that guarantees an annual amount to Cree individuals who choose hunting, trapping, and fishing as their way of life. The program promotes traditional Cree activities by providing a guaranteed income, benefits, and other incentives, ensuring that these important practices remain a viable and respected livelihood option. How Does the Program Work? The program calculates benefits based on the number of days adults in the family spend in the bush and the number of adults and children in the family. To remain eligible, the head of the family must spend at least 120 days per year engaging in harvesting and related activities in the bush. Seasonal or temporary economic activities are allowed, but all income earned is factored into benefits calculations. Benefits are determined at the beginning of each year based on estimated time to be spent in the bush for that year. The annual amount is then divided into four payments, issued after meetings with the local community administrator in September, December, April, and June. What Activities are Eligible? Eligible activities under the program include traditional activities related to wildlife harvesting, with the exception of commercial fishing. Participants are involved in hunting, fishing, and trapping as their main activities when out in the forest, away from the community. These practices form the core of Cree culture and identity.
