Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Canadian Irish Studies Foundation (CISF)

The Canadian Irish Studies Foundation (CISF) is a charitable foundation dedicated to financing the study and teaching of Irish and Irish-Canadian history and culture at Concordia University in Montréal. Created in 1995, the Foundation has built a substantial endowment through donations from individuals, corporations, community organizations and governments in Canada, Quebec and Ireland. Working in close partnership with Concordia’s School of Irish Studies, it channels this capital into long-term financial support for students, faculty positions and academic programming.

The CISF has raised more than $7 million and is described as one of Concordia’s largest benefactors. Its funds have helped create a Chair in Canadian Irish Studies, supported the establishment of the Centre for Canadian Irish Studies (now the School of Irish Studies), and contributed to visiting scholar positions and Irish-language teaching. Government contributions from Quebec, Canada and Ireland, along with major gifts from banks, corporations and community foundations, have all been leveraged to build a sustainable endowment.

A core mandate of the Foundation is to finance scholarships and special projects for outstanding students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The CISF reports awarding more than $150,000 annually in scholarships and financial awards for students in Irish Studies, and the 10th Anniversary booklet notes that more than $1 million has been granted in scholarships and student support since 2009.

Through collaborations with donors and community groups, the Foundation has helped create at least 27 scholarships with values typically ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per year, as well as larger tuition-remission awards. Named funds such as the Brian O’Neill Gallery Scholarship Fund provide substantial annual assistance to students majoring in Irish Studies, while numerous community-funded awards honour prominent members of Montréal’s Irish community and support research, language study and graduate work.

Beyond direct student support, the Canadian Irish Studies Foundation co-finances key academic initiatives. It has contributed to endowed chairs such as the Johnson Chair in Quebec and Canadian Irish Studies, supports visiting professors through the Peter O’Brien Visiting Scholar program, and helps underwrite Irish Public Lecture Series events that bring distinguished speakers to Concordia. The Foundation also assists with community outreach activities and special projects that highlight the history and culture of the Irish in Montréal, Quebec and Canada.

These efforts are tightly integrated with the School of Irish Studies’ broader ecosystem of funding and awards, which includes entrance scholarships, out-of-province awards and tuition-remission programs promoted on Concordia’s website. The CISF’s role is to provide a philanthropic backbone that ensures Irish Studies programming and student support can grow and endure over the long term.

The primary beneficiaries of the Foundation’s funding are undergraduate and graduate students pursuing Irish Studies at Concordia, including majors, minors and those focusing on Irish-related topics in other disciplines. Indirectly, faculty, visiting scholars and the wider community also benefit through lectures, conferences, publications and cultural events supported by CISF resources.

By sustaining scholarships, chairs and academic programming, the Canadian Irish Studies Foundation has helped Concordia’s School of Irish Studies become a recognized international centre for the study of Ireland and its diaspora. Its philanthropic model, built on community engagement and government-university partnerships, illustrates how a specialized foundation can have a broad impact on higher education and cultural understanding.
