Role of the Canadian Honey Council in the Funding Ecosystem
The Canadian Honey Council serves as the national coordinating body for the beekeeping industry in Canada. Through its administration of the Canadian Bee Research Fund (CBRF), CHC plays a critical role in distributing research funding to support honey bee health and sustainability. The CBRF was established to counteract reductions in government funding for honey bee research and operates as a long-term endowment fund supported by donations from the apiculture industry.
Funding Programs
CHC administers several funding initiatives:
- Canadian Bee Research Fund: A registered charity that distributes funds annually for bee health research projects. Only the generated interest from the endowment is made available to ensure sustainability.
- AS Atwal Graduate Scholarship in Bee Research: A $5,000 scholarship for graduate students at Canadian universities working on bees, funded by the Kapoor Singh Siddoo Foundation.
- Save Our Bees: A donation program where 100% of contributions are directed to the Canadian Bee Research Fund for research.
Governance and Partnership
The CBRF is a joint project of the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists (CAPA) and the Canadian Honey Council. The Board of Directors comprises four members, two from each organization. This unique partnership ensures that beekeepers directly influence the type of research supported.
