Role of BILD Calgary Region Foundation in the funding ecosystem

BILD Calgary Region Foundation is the charitable arm of the Building Industry and Land Development Association in the Calgary region. Incorporated in 1986, it was created to help the communities where industry members work and live by supporting shelter-related charitable initiatives, education opportunities and housing research. The Foundation channels financial and in-kind resources from builders, developers and related firms into projects that expand safe, affordable and specialized housing.
The Foundation operates as a separate legal entity and is regarded as the charity of choice for the local home building and land development industry. It has returned more than $7.5–8 million to the community and helped create over 7,000 safe living spaces through capital contributions, project funding and coordinated donation of materials, labour and professional services.

Funding themes and typical projects

Funding focuses on projects that provide shelter and supportive housing for vulnerable populations. Past initiatives include significant donations to organizations such as Alpha House, Habitat for Humanity, Avenue 15, Camp Horizon, YWCA Mary Dover House, Alice Bissett Place, ARBI and others. Projects have supported women and children fleeing violence, people experiencing homelessness, youth at risk, individuals with brain injuries, people with disabilities, low-income families and seniors.
Support is often provided on a per-project basis. Each proposal is assessed to determine the level of financial contribution and the extent of in-kind participation by member companies. Contributions may cover land acquisition, construction or renovation costs, as well as professional expertise, building materials and volunteer labour. This model allows the Foundation to leverage industry capacity to deliver large-scale community housing projects that might otherwise be unaffordable.

Governance, membership and operations

The Foundation shares the same membership base as BILD Calgary Region, but it is governed by its own Board of Governors elected at the association’s Annual General Meeting. Board members and fundraising organizers serve as volunteers. The parent association donates staff support, office space and equipment, enabling the Foundation to operate with no overhead and direct the maximum possible share of donations to projects.

Beneficiaries and impact

Beneficiaries are primarily registered charities and community organizations in Calgary and surrounding municipalities that deliver housing, shelter or related support services. Through partnerships with municipal, provincial and federal programs, as well as other housing and homelessness organizations, the Foundation has helped build or renovate crisis shelters, transitional and supportive housing, accessible camp facilities, and affordable rental units.
By mobilizing the expertise and resources of the regional homebuilding industry, BILD Calgary Region Foundation plays a strategic role in expanding safe, inclusive and affordable housing options, improving quality of life and strengthening social infrastructure across the Calgary region.
