Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Annapolis West Health Foundation (AWHF)

Annapolis West Health Foundation (AWHF) is a community-based charitable foundation dedicated to enhancing health and wellness services in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis West region. Originating from the former Annapolis General Hospital Foundation in the early 1990s, it now works closely with the Annapolis Community Health Centre and regional partners to complement provincially funded health care. The foundation channels donor contributions into targeted financial support for programs, services and equipment that respond to local health priorities.

AWHF has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years to sustain and improve care at the Annapolis Community Health Centre and Valley Regional Hospital. Its funding portfolio covers a spectrum of needs, from core medical infrastructure to community-based wellness and education initiatives, ensuring residents in more than 35 rural communities can access appropriate health supports.

The foundation provides ongoing financial support in several key areas: a Van Transportation Program to subsidize travel for medical appointments; palliative care and seniors’ safety initiatives; an Equipment Funding Program that helps bridge gaps between government budgets and clinical needs; and specific health services such as the fully funded Diabetes Foot Care Program for moderate- to high-risk patients without third-party coverage.

AWHF also contributes to recreational and preventive health infrastructure, including support for the Annapolis Community Pool, and invests in medical equipment at Valley Regional Hospital, such as CT scanners, echocardiography and pulmonary testing systems that serve patients across Annapolis County.

Through its Education Program, the foundation operates a Student Health Related Bursary Program. This bursary supports graduates of Annapolis West Education Centre who are entering or continuing health-related studies at universities or community colleges. The program sets out clear eligibility criteria, an application form, interview process and conditions for disbursement, with funds paid directly to educational institutions upon successful completion of the first term.

Beyond individual bursaries, AWHF administers a Grants Program aimed at organizations undertaking innovative proposals to improve the health of citizens in Annapolis West. Applications are reviewed by a dedicated Grants Committee, with final decisions made by the Board of Directors. This mechanism enables community groups and partners to secure project-based funding for health promotion, prevention and service enhancement initiatives tailored to local needs.

The foundation’s mission is to complement the health care system in Annapolis West by providing financial support for selected initiatives within its sustainable resources. It operates across more than 35 communities, focusing on practical, locally grounded solutions that address transportation barriers, aging demographics, chronic disease management and the retention of health professionals.
