Who is eligible?
- Nonprofit organizations currently operating in Alberta that are incorporated, established, and/or registered in Alberta under the laws of Alberta or Canada, and provide publicly accessible programs and services to the broader community.
Who is not eligible
- Organizations operationally funded through Acute Care Alberta, Assisted Living Alberta, Primary Care Alberta, or Recovery Alberta.
- Universities, colleges, and post-secondary institutions funded through Alberta Advanced Education.
- Organizations directly or indirectly affiliated with a political party.
- Previous recipients of the Screening Development Micro-Grant in the past 2 program years.
Eligible expenses
- Staff time for developing or updating volunteer screening policies, procedure documents, role descriptions, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Social Justice (IDEAS) policies as it pertains to volunteering, and volunteer training and support resources such as guides, webinars, or virtual courses.
- Staff time for developing surveys to collect feedback from current volunteers and program participants on current volunteer screening and engagement practices.
- Small contracts with third parties for research, consultation, training, development, etc.
- Professional development costs for Volunteer Managers, including virtual or in-person classes, webinars, physical or digital reading material, subscriptions, and gated content.
- Other costs seen to aid in the organization’s development of equitable volunteer screening policies and procedures after discussion and approval by Volunteer Alberta.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Fees associated with background checks, including Police Information Checks or Vulnerable Sector Checks.
- General operational costs not directly related to volunteer screening development, including rent, utilities, and insurance.
- Day-to-day volunteer program expenses, including food, parking for volunteers, and venue rental costs.
- Volunteer Alberta Membership Fees.
- Volunteer Alberta workshops, consulting services, or educational resources.

- Review the Grant Eligibility Criteria and Eligible Expenses documents before applying.
- Complete the application form in your own words, using clear and specific examples from your organization’s context.
- Upload the required Direct Deposit Form with the application.
- Submit the application through the online form.
Processing and Agreement
- The information collected in the form will be used to assess eligibility and organizational needs.
- Funding decisions will be communicated in August.
- Applicants who do not provide the signed Direct Deposit Form and Void Cheque may have their applications rejected.
- A Direct Deposit Form is required for final approval.
- Successful applicants must complete foundational learning through the Resource Library, and a Final Report Survey will be required at the end of the granting period.

The organization must have more than 10 volunteers a year requiring vulnerable sector checks in positions of significant trust and/or authority over vulnerable populations, and its screening policies/procedures and volunteer role descriptions must be incomplete or not updated in the past 2 years.
