Overview

This program provides up to $20,000 per project to enhance road user safety in British Columbia. Funding can support low-cost roadway infrastructure improvements, policy or enforcement initiatives, educational campaigns, and other innovative road safety projects.

Activities funded

  • Design and installation of low-cost roadway infrastructure improvements (temporary/pilot or permanent).
  • Indigenous-directed road safety projects aligned with community-set priorities.
  • Policy or enforcement initiatives that improve road safety.
  • Educational campaigns promoting safer travel for road users.
  • Other innovative initiatives that enhance safe and equitable travel.
Examples of admissible projects:
$ 19,500
Quick-build school-zone curb extensions, radar feedback, and safety education campaign
$ 19,950
Crosswalk lighting upgrades plus speed feedback and equity-focused safety workshops

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be an eligible organization type (local government, Indigenous government, public sector organization, or non-governmental organization).
  • The proposed initiative must aim to enhance the safety of road users (including pedestrians and cyclists).
  • The project must take place in British Columbia.
  • The application must be submitted online through the program’s grant portal (or via an approved alternative submission method).

How to apply

Step 1: Access the application portal
  • Go to the online grant portal.
Step 2: Choose a submission format
  • Complete the application in text, or use an alternative format if preferred.
  • If submitting via alternative means, request submission instructions from the program administrator.
Step 3: Submit the application online
  • Complete and submit the application through the grant portal.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed after submission, with decisions generally expected in February/March.

Additional information

  • Priority may be given to projects in rural or remote communities and Indigenous communities.
  • Priority may be given to projects benefiting equity-seeking populations.
  • Applicants may request a complimentary consultation with a road safety engineer to support project planning.
  • Consultations are planned prior to the application deadline (late October to mid-November).
