Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a local or provincial not-for-profit organization that has existed for more than one year.
  • The organization must be in good standing with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Park Board.
  • The sporting event must take place within the City of Vancouver or be led by local Indigenous groups (Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleilwaututh) occurring on their respective Reserve lands.
  • The project must be a not-for-profit sporting event.

Who is eligible?

  • Local not-for-profit organizations
  • Provincial not-for-profit organizations
  • Sporting organizations supported or sanctioned by a recognized BC Provincial Sport Organization
  • Indigenous organizations from Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleilwaututh Band Councils or unincorporated groups led by these nations (for events on reserve lands)
  • Community and event organizations delivering sport events

Who is not eligible

  • For-profit organizations hosting professional events.
  • Organizations hosting sport events outside the City of Vancouver.
  • Organizations hosting playoff or league games.
  • Groups organizing sport events primarily for fundraising purposes.
  • Events that have already taken place or have received funding from the Sport Hosting Vancouver – Sport Tourism Development Fund.

Eligible expenses

  • Operating costs directly related to the organization and delivery of the sport event (excluding staff wages and administration costs).

Eligible geographic areas

  • City of Vancouver
  • Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleilwaututh Reserve lands (for local Indigenous groups and events led by these groups)

Selection criteria

  • Demonstrated community support for the event.
  • Accessibility of the event, including availability to the public.
  • Potential to build a stronger, healthier, and engaged community.
  • Affordability or free participation for attendees.
  • Strength of event planning, management, and evaluation processes.
  • Possession of required licenses and permits.
  • Contribution to or support of City Council’s priorities.
  • Soundness of the financial plan, including secured and unsecured revenue sources and economic impact.
  • Integration of best practices in environmental sustainability and degree of environmental enhancement.

How to apply

Select grant type

  • Choose the appropriate grant category for your event (Local/Regional Tournament, New Sport Event Initiative, or Annual Sport Event)
  • Review the specific conditions and funding limits for the selected category

Consult with City staff

  • Contact the Sport Hosting Manager to discuss your event
  • Consult with City staff prior to submitting an application
  • Request guidance if needed before initiating your application

Prepare your application documents

  • Download and complete the official application form (in Word format)
  • Attach any required supporting documentation as PDFs
  • Avoid designing elaborate presentation materials

Submit your application

  • Email the completed application form and supporting documents to sporthosting.grant@vancouver.ca
  • Ensure your submission is at least 90 days before the event (unless approved otherwise)

Wait for assessment and decision

  • Await review by the Sport Hosting Review Panel
  • Your application will be evaluated and recommended to City Council for final decision
  • Expect a decision by the announced council meeting date

Acknowledge City support

  • If approved, acknowledge the City’s support in all materials
  • Apply the logo guidelines provided by the City

Submit the post-event report

  • Submit a post-event report within 60 days of event completion
  • Use the final report template provided by the City
  • Return unused funds, if applicable

  • Organizations receiving funding must acknowledge the City's support in all related information materials, adhering to provided logo use guidelines.
  • A post-event report is required within 60 days of the completed event, documenting the use of funds as initially requested.
  • Unused portions of the grant must be returned to the City of Vancouver by the date of post-event report submission.
  • Prior consultation with City staff is encouraged, especially before launching a bid or securing an event.
