Selection criteria
- Relevance review is conducted at the Letter of Intent stage, and only relevant applications move to full application.
- Full applications are reviewed by CIHR peer review committees, with education and training experts and research experts.
- Review criteria include Rationale/Objectives; Mentors; Curriculum, Innovation and Approaches; Collaborative Team Research; Ethics, Knowledge Translation and Professional Skills; Recruitment; Tracking and Evaluation; Organization; and Institutional Support and Long-Term Sustainability.
- Renewal applications are also assessed on the Quality of outcomes of prior CIHR Training Grant.
- Applications scoring less than 3.7 on the CIHR 0 to 4.9 rating scale are not eligible to receive funding.
How to apply
- Use CIHR Web Forms to apply for funding.
- Complete the application process in two steps: Letter of Intent and Application.
- Send the original Letter of Intent and six copies by courier to CIHR.
- Applicants deemed relevant at the Letter of Intent stage are invited to submit a full application by the deadline date.
Processing and Agreement
- The Letter of Intent is used to determine relevance only.
- Applications deemed relevant at the Letter of Intent stage are invited to submit a full application.
- CIHR peer review committees evaluate full applications.
- CIHR Institutes, branches and offices, and partner organizations receive ranking lists, peer scores, and recommendations on funding level and award term for fundable applications.
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must submit a yearly progress report and a mid-term report in the third year.
