Who is eligible?

• Resident physicians in Ontario
• Post-MD physicians with PGY status
• Ontario medical research applicants

Who is not eligible

• Residents based outside Ontario
• Clinical fellows
• Applicants whose residency ends before the project end date
• Principal investigators who hold a PhD but not an MD

Eligible expenses

• Personnel salaries and benefits for technicians, technologists, research assistants, trainees, and students
• Project-related equipment, materials, and supplies
• Publication costs, including open-access fees and reprints
• Conference travel for scientific presentations
• Other direct project expenses, including research activity travel

Ineligible Costs and Activities

• Overhead and indirect costs
• Salary support for the resident or named investigators
• Major equipment, unless required for the supported project
• Operating costs, budget deficits, membership fees, entertainment, and hospitality
• Projects conducted outside Ontario

• Ontario

• Scientific merit and clinical relevance are weighted equally.
• Innovation and contribution to current knowledge are considered.
• Feasibility, methodology, and timeline are assessed.
• Strength of the knowledge translation plan is reviewed.
• Budget justification and project environment are evaluated.

• Step 1: Prepare the application
  • Review the funding guidelines and complete the online application form.
  • Complete the PSI application submission survey.
  • Provide the requested signatures and supporting materials.
• Step 2: Submit online
  • Submit the application through PSI’s online application system.
  • Do not upload scanned documents except the completed signature page.
• Step 3: Review and peer assessment
  • PSI reviews the file for completeness and eligibility.
  • Eligible applications are sent for external peer review.
• Step 4: Decision and follow-up
  • The Grants Committee makes the funding decision after peer review.
  • Applicants receive the decision and reviewer comments through the online system.

• Applications are first checked for completeness and eligibility.
• Eligible files are sent for external peer review.
• The Grants Committee reviews the application and external reviews.
• Applicants are notified of the funding decision and reviewer comments.
• If funded, the project must follow the award conditions and reporting requirements.

• Applications are reviewed after submission through PSI’s online system.
• Applicants may be asked for clarification or additional information during review.
• Resubmitted declined applications are allowed only once and must address prior reviewer comments.
• The funding body may invite grantees to assist with peer review in the future.
