Who is eligible?
- Resident principal investigators/applicants completing a residency program in Ontario with PGY status
Who is not eligible
- Applicants whose residency will end prior to the project end date
- Principal Investigators who hold a Ph.D but not an M.D.
- Residents based outside of Ontario
- Clinical Fellows
- Applicants must not submit more than one application as Principal Investigator per grant cycle, and only one project per Principal Investigator may be supported at a time
Eligible expenses
- Salaries for technicians, technologists, research assistants and other similar persons required for the successful completion of the project
- Salaries for trainees and students, including medical students and fellows, plus the employer’s cost of project staff benefits proportional to project time
- Equipment necessary for carrying out the project activities, including the purchase and maintenance of animals
- Direct project-related material and supplies, publication costs, and costs associated with attending scientific meetings to present papers on a project
- Other direct project-related items, including research activity travel costs, that are necessary for completion of the project activities
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Applications focusing on cancer, heart & stroke, or pharmaceutical drug development, including screening, diagnosis, prevention, survivorship, or any phase of cancer and cardiac research
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- Fund-raising campaigns, building funds or other capital cost campaigns, operating costs, budget deficits, membership fees, entertainment or hospitality costs, service programs, and ongoing research
- Major equipment unless required for a research project being supported by the Foundation, films, books and journals, overhead and indirect costs, expenses pre-dating funding approval, projects outside Ontario, and curriculum or educational tool development costs
- Personnel costs for named investigators or residents, and secretarial assistance

Selection criteria
- Scientific merit and clinical relevance are assessed on an equal weighting basis
- The application is reviewed for a comprehensive literature review, current knowledge, innovation, and added value
- Feasibility, methodology, statistical justification, and timeframe are assessed
- Personnel, equipment, budget justification, and the strength of the knowledge translation plan are considered
- The committee also considers clinical impact, reduction in health costs, provincial relevance, and alternative approaches
How to apply
- Submit all requests for funding using PSI’s online application system
- Complete the PSI application submission survey
- Do not upload scanned documents to the online system, except for the completed signature page
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed for completeness and eligibility, then sent for external peer review
- The PSI Grants Committee reviews the application after the peer review process and issues a funding decision
- Applicants generally receive the decision and unattributed external reviewer comments within 15 business days
- If funding is awarded, the first payment is conditional upon receipt of all items listed in the award letter
- The Principal Investigator must report results, publications, and presentations, and must notify PSI of significant project changes before they are implemented
