Who is eligible?
- A College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario licensed M.D. within six years of their first academic appointment.
- A clinical fellow who is a College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario licensed M.D.
- A research fellow or a postdoctoral fellow who is a College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario licensed M.D., who is still undertaking clinical duties and completing research that would benefit the health of Ontarians.
Who is not eligible
- Investigators based outside of Ontario.
- Investigators whose first academic appointment was more than six years ago.
- Residents (must apply through the Foundation’s Resident Research Grant stream).
- Principal Investigators who hold a Ph.D but not an M.D.
- Graduate students or trainees.
Eligible expenses
- Salaries for technicians, technologists, research assistants and other similar persons required for the successful completion of the project, plus the employer's cost of project staff benefits and salaries for trainees and students, including medical students and fellows.
- Equipment necessary for carrying out the project activities.
- Direct project related material and supplies, including the cost of purchasing animals and the maintenance thereof.
- Publication costs including open-access fee and the cost to purchase a reasonable number of reprints.
- Costs associated with attending scientific meetings to present papers on a project and other direct project related items such as research activity travel costs necessary for completion of the project activities and requested with detailed justification.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Applications focused on problems associated with cancer, heart & stroke, or pharmaceutical drug development studies, including screening, diagnosis, prevention, survivorship, or any phase of the illness of cancer and cardiac research.
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
- Fund-raising campaigns, building funds or other capital cost campaigns, operating costs of any organization or department, budget deficits, membership fees, entertainment / hospitality costs, service programs, and ongoing research.
- Major equipment unless required for a research project; computers, furniture, tape recorders, photographic equipment, calculators; service contracts on equipment; and fees charged by the investigator's institution for IT support.
- Films, books and journals; projects where the Principal Investigator is located and/or the research is being completed outside the province of Ontario; personnel costs for individuals named on the application or salaries/stipends for residents; and secretarial assistance.

Selection criteria
- Scientific merit and clinical relevance are weighted equally.
- Innovation and significant contribution to the state of knowledge.
- Strong knowledge translation component or plan.
- Feasibility, appropriate methodology, statistically justified sample size, and a realistic timeframe.
- Investigator qualifications, satisfactory research environment, adequate personnel and equipment, justified budget, relevance to the provincial health context, and impact on reducing health costs.
How to apply
- Submit all requests for funding using PSI’s online application system.
- Complete the PSI application submission survey.
- Use the online application form for specific information on required documents, page limits, signatures, and other proposal details.
- Do not upload scanned documents to the online system, except letters of support with signatures and the completed signature page.
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed for completeness and eligibility.
- Complete applications are sent for external peer review by experts in the research focus area.
- PSI’s internal review committee considers the application at its next meeting following the peer review process.
- Applicants generally receive a decision within 6 months and unattributed external reviewer comments within 15 business days.
- If funded, the first payment is conditional upon receipt of all items listed in the award letter; projects longer than twelve months require an interim report and a financial accounting statement at the end of each twelve-month period; and the Principal Investigator must report the results of the project, including publications and presentations, so PSI can track the outcomes of all funded projects.
