Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Local business owners in Downtown Oshawa
  • Restaurants and outdoor cafes
  • Businesses operating on City or Regional roads

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Permanent patio construction
  • Utility connections or upgrades, including electrical, sprinkler, gas, and heaters
  • Increased occupancy
  • Patio access through kitchen or employee-only areas

Selection criteria

  • Complete application.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare patio plan
    • Choose the patio type.
    • Prepare drawings and photos of the proposed area.
    • Obtain neighbour consent if needed.
  • Step 2: Gather required documents
    • Collect the business licence, insurance certificate, and liquor licence if applicable.
    • Complete the application form.
  • Step 3: Submit the application
    • Email the application and supporting documents to business@oshawa.ca.
    • Submit the insurance certificate within five business days.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed after submission for completeness and compliance with all mandatory requirements.
  • The City may revoke the permit if the insurance certificate is not received within five business days.
  • Patios that do not meet safety criteria may be removed by bylaw officers.

Additional information

  • Temporary patio permits are available from April 15 to October 31.
  • Permits issued under the program are non-renewable.
  • Businesses serving alcohol must contact the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
