- Indigenous non-governmental organizations in Canada.
- Canadian non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations.
- Researchers or scholars working in Canadian municipal, provincial, or territorial governments.
Who is not eligible
- Organizations without an eligible Canadian institutional affiliation.
- Applicants who cannot hold funds through an authorized CIHR/NSERC institution.
- Projects that do not meet the required interdisciplinary team structure.
Eligible expenses
- Community engagement and mobilization costs, including culturally relevant items and reimbursements.
- Translation and preparation of public-facing materials.
- Release time allowance for eligible knowledge users.
- Honoraria and consultant fees for Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Purchases from organizations not eligible to receive NSERC funds.
- Travel and subsistence costs for personnel from organizations not eligible to receive NSERC funds.
- Pre-clinical development of new vaccine candidates in the medical countermeasures pool.

- British Columbia-based institutions may be eligible for specific co-funding support.
Processing and Agreement
- LOIs are reviewed for relevance to the program objectives and selected research area.
- Relevant LOIs are peer reviewed and top-ranked teams are invited to submit a full application.
- Applications are funded based on ranking within each pool.
- Successful applicants are notified through the Notice of Decision process and published by CIHR.
Additional information
- Applications are submitted in two stages: Letter of Intent and Full Application.
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must remain the same between stages.
- CIHR will hold a collaboration call for shortlisted applicants after LOI relevance review.
- Webinars are available to support applicants and answer questions.
