Overview

The Supportive Housing Capital Grant program provides up to $25,000 to fund small capital projects that enhance, improve, or beautify non-profit supportive housing buildings in Vancouver. Eligible activities include landscaping, security upgrades, outdoor and indoor amenity improvements, building enhancements, and planning or feasibility studies.

Financing terms and conditions

  • Maximum grant amount of $25,000 per application.
  • Project must be completed within 1 year from fund disbursement.
  • Grant funds cannot be used for staffing costs, honoraria, or similar expenses.
  • Applicants must demonstrate all project costs are accounted for; matching funding is not required.

  • Improving outdoor and indoor amenities for residents, such as adding recreational equipment or common area furnishings.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a Vancouver-based non-profit organization.
  • The organization must be directly involved in property management or operations of supportive housing in Vancouver.
  • The organization must have on-site staffing the majority of the time.
  • The organization must offer at least two on-site support services such as meal programs, home care, counselling, life-skills training, employment services, health or addiction supports, community connection, or referrals to off-site services.

  • Vancouver-based non-profit organizations involved in property management or operations of supportive housing

Who is not eligible

  • For-profit businesses and commercial enterprises.
  • Organizations not directly involved in the property management or operations of supportive housing in Vancouver.
  • Entities that do not operate non-profit supportive housing facilities.

Eligible expenses

  • Landscaping and urban agriculture installations, such as planter boxes, trees, and other plantings.
  • Fencing and shade enhancements for outdoor areas.
  • Outdoor furniture and amenity equipment, including items like basketball hoops and barbecues.
  • Development or improvement of outdoor amenity spaces, such as gazebos or sheds for community activities.
  • External storage spaces for building residents.
  • Building painting and the installation of sculptures or art installations.
  • Building amenities like awnings and window coverings (curtains, blinds, or shutters).
  • Fans or portable air conditioners for communal spaces.
  • Indoor amenity equipment, including recreational equipment (pool tables, workout equipment), and furniture for shared areas.
  • Kitchen enhancements, such as the purchase of new appliances.
  • Security improvements, including garbage security or enclosures and lighting.
  • Enhancements for safe consumption spaces, including air scrubbers, cameras, or barn doors.
  • Planning or feasibility studies related to capital improvements.
