Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Anyone aged 18+ who is out of school and interested in pursuing a career in entrepreneurship.
  • Anyone interested in starting a new business, expanding, or buying an existing business in Huron County.
  • Applicants enrolled in part-time schooling or training, defined as 1 course per semester, are eligible.
  • Applicants working part-time, defined as no more than 20 hours per week, are eligible.

Who is not eligible

  • People working full-time.
  • Applicants enrolled at the same time in the Ontario Works Self Employment Development program, Summer Company, or any other similar programs offered by government funded organizations.

Eligible expenses

  • Eligible expenses must be reasonably aligned with the business.
  • Asset-based or in-kind contributions at fair market value, such as equipment or machinery required to run the business.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Sweat equity.
  • Loans or other types of loaned support.

Selection criteria

  • Feasibility of the business.
  • Quality of applicant, including teachability and entrepreneurial aptitude.
  • Potential for job creation.
  • Start-up budget and financing needs of the business.
  • Cash and in-kind contributions of the participant.
  • Quality of the pitch presentation and the specific funding request.

How to apply

  • Complete the training program and develop the business plan.
  • Submit the business plan to be considered for a chance to present to an external Grant Review Committee.
  • Complete the final business plan package.
  • Make a 10-minute pitch to the external Grant Review Committee.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applicants who are accepted must sign a Micro-Financing agreement.
  • Grant recipients must continue 1:1 advisory sessions post-program.
  • Recipients must report on business objectives and grant fund expenditures during post-program 1:1 advisory sessions, including receipts.
  • Recipients must provide financials during the 6- and 12-month check-in meetings.

Additional information

  • Applications for the 2026 Starter Company Plus program are open for the month of July.
  • Applications are reviewed as they are received, and selected applicants may be contacted for an interview.
  • Spaces are limited and admission is competitive.
  • Grant funding is considered taxable income, and recipients will receive a T4A for the amount received.
