Eligibility
Who is eligible?
- Canadian citizens.
- Permanent residents of Canada.
- Student permit or visa holders.
- Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at a Canadian postsecondary institution.
- Previous winners, if the research featured is materially different from their previous winning submission(s) and they meet all other eligibility requirements.
Who is not eligible
- Postdoctoral researchers.
- SSHRC employees, including immediate family members and those living in the same household.

Selection criteria
- Submissions that meet all eligibility requirements are judged on Creativity/Engagement (30%), Persuasiveness (30%), and Clarity (40%).
How to apply
- Agree to the Consent and agreement form.
- Submit the entry electronically through SSHRC Storytellers Secure Upload between October 20, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. (eastern), and January 19, 2027, at 5:00 p.m. (eastern).
- Submit the story as a file through the Secure Upload; website links are not accepted.
Processing and Agreement
- Submissions are judged by a panel of judges chosen by SSHRC, and the decisions of the judges and SSHRC are final and not open to appeal.
- Finalists and winners are notified by email in March 2027 with instructions on how to claim the applicable prize.
- Before collecting a prize, selected finalists or winners must provide a consent and release within five calendar days of being notified.
- If an individual declines the prize, it may be awarded to another submission in accordance with the Challenge rules and regulations.
Additional information
- Submissions may be in English, French, or both.
- Collaborative submissions are accepted for up to two students.
