Overview
The Smart Agriculture Living Lab Call for Proposal offers Canadian startups and scaleups up to $100,000 per project to develop, test, and validate innovative smart agriculture solutions. The program funds eligible activities including research, testing, implementation, and validation of technologies in areas such as agricultural robotics, smart irrigation, AI for precision agriculture, sustainable pest management, and AI-powered farm management software.
Financing terms and conditions
- Up to five (5) grants of a maximum of CAD 100,000 each will be awarded per project.
- Funding covers up to 50% of eligible project costs; the remaining amount must be secured from other sources.
- Project duration is up to twelve (12) months, including all research, testing, validation, and reporting activities.
- No reimbursement is made until a duly signed Ultimate Recipient Agreement (URA) is returned to CENGN.

- Development and deployment of smart agricultural robotics and automation solutions for tasks such as weeding, harvesting, or planting.
- Implementation of intelligent irrigation systems utilizing real-time data and IoT devices to optimize water use and adapt to climatic variabilities.
- Creation of AI-driven solutions for precision agriculture, with a focus on affordability and accessibility for small and medium-sized farms.
- Design of sustainable pest management technologies that reduce reliance on chemical pesticides and support environmental goals.
- Development of AI-powered farm management software, including dashboards for crop planning, resource management, and financial tracking, tailored to the needs of smallholder farms.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be a Canadian-registered organization with 499 or fewer full-time employees.
- The proposed technological solution must be deployable within a CENGN Living Lab.
- At least 90% of the project’s eligible work must be conducted in Canada.
- The applicant must demonstrate the ability to manage project finances, including providing credit verification and a two-year cash flow forecast.
- All participants must be willing to sign a participation agreement, and project collaborators must declare combined government funding levels as specified.

- Expenses for operating regional offices in Canada directly linked to the project.
- Research and development (R&D) costs that support innovation and commercialization aligned with the project objectives.

Selection criteria
- Understanding of the market challenge, the solution's value proposition, and commercial potential (Maximum score: 10).
- Experience and skills of the project team (Maximum score: 10).
- Feasibility to achieve project technical and commercial objectives within the Living Lab environment (Maximum score: 30; Minimum required: 22).
- Quality of the project plan (Maximum score: 25; Minimum required: 20).
- Risk management and mitigation strategies (Maximum score: 10).
- Benefits to Canada (Maximum score: 15; Minimum required: 10).

Draft the project proposal
- Prepare a clear and detailed project proposal addressing the industry challenges specified

- Define ROI, implementation timeline, and scalability prospects

Compile required documentation
- Assemble all required documents, including business information, team CVs, financial forecasts, and letters of intent (if required)
- Ensure the complete project budget and price are provided
- Declare the combined level of government financial aid

Submit the application online
- Submit the project proposal and all supporting documents via the secure CENGN online portal
- Ensure your submission is completed before the stated deadline

Await selection results
- Wait for CENGN and the selection committee to review and evaluate your proposal
- You will be notified of the results following the evaluation period

Finalize agreement and project plan
- If your proposal is selected, enter into the project planning phase with CENGN
- Sign the Ultimate Recipient Agreement (URA) and finalize the project plan, budget, deliverables, and reporting obligations

Execute the funded project
- Begin project execution as outlined in the final agreement
- Collaborate with CENGN and Living Lab partners throughout the project duration
- Ensure reporting and documentation obligations are fulfilled

- External evaluators, infrastructure partners, and Living Lab hosts involved in supported projects may access sensitive data and intellectual property only as required for project activities and under strict confidentiality.
- Summaries of non-confidential project results and intellectual property must be provided by participants and may be shared with other CENGN partners for potential collaboration.
- Any intellectual property developed by participating organizations remains their ownership unless otherwise agreed.
- Credit checks and a two-year cash flow forecast are required as part of the financial management demonstration.
