Who is eligible?

  • Students of Native Canadian ancestry receiving a JD degree in Canada.
  • Students of Indigenous Canadian ancestry entering second or third year of law school in Canada.

Eligible expenses

  • Travel costs to attend the annual IBA conference
  • Accommodation costs to attend the annual IBA conference

Eligible geographic areas

  • Canada
  • Saskatchewan residents may be given preference in a tie.

Selection criteria

  • Probable contribution as a lawyer to establishing the rights of Native people in Canada and solving problems faced by Native persons and their communities.
  • Academic record in law studies.
  • Preference may be given to a Saskatchewan resident if the committee cannot decide between eligible students.
  • Past and expected contribution to furthering the needs, concerns and aspirations of native people and their communities in Canada.
  • The student must be entering second or third year law.

Prepare application documents

  • Prepare a resume of your career and education.
  • Gather your law school transcripts and any other required academic information.

  • Write a letter of application including the information requested in the scholarship notice.
  • Address the application to the appropriate committee or director at the Indigenous Law Centre, University of Saskatchewan.

Submit application package

  • Send the completed application package in writing to the address indicated in the scholarship notice.
  • Submit your application by July 31 or by June 30 for the Indigenous Bar Association scholarship.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by a committee, which selects the award recipients.
  • For one scholarship, if the committee cannot decide between two or more eligible students, preference may be given to a Saskatchewan resident.
