Eligibility
- Principal Investigator must have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field.
- Proposal must be submitted by a nonprofit administering organization (university, college, research organization, school district, or 501(c)(3) organization).
- PIs and Co-PIs cannot hold more than one active Spencer research grant at a time.
- Only one research proposal can be submitted to Spencer at a time per PI/Co-PI.

- Personnel salaries and benefits (PI, Co-PI, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, research assistants)
- Travel for project work and conference dissemination
- Equipment and software
- Project expenses including supplies, participant stipends, transcription, and communication costs
- Subcontracts and consultant fees

- Follow the registration guidelines to create your profile
- If you already have an account, log in and update your profile

Complete My Profile with CV
- Log in to your account on the Spencer Foundation online portal
- Complete all required information on the My Profile page
- Upload your current CV (10-page limit)

Create and prepare preproposal
- Go to your Workbench and click "Apply" for Large Research Grants on Education
- Prepare the preproposal PDF containing: narrative (max 1250 words), references (2 pages), team description (1 page), timeline (1 page), and budget (2 pages)
- Fill out Project Summary, Resubmission status, and Project Data categories in the online form

Submit preproposal
- Name the PDF file with PI's last name and request ID number
- Upload the single PDF file containing all preproposal components to SmartSimple
- Click the Submit button to complete your submission

Wait for preproposal review results
- Wait for review feedback from Spencer Foundation
- If invited, you will receive notification to submit a full proposal
- If not invited, you will still receive light feedback on your submission

Prepare full proposal elements
- Access full proposal application from your Workbench (by invitation only)
- Connect Co-PI profiles to the proposal
- Complete Proposal Summary with title, dates, research questions, and 200-word summary

Complete budget and justification
- Create detailed budget using the online form categories: Salaries, Benefits, Other Collaborator, Travel, Equipment and Software, Project Expenses, Other, and Subcontracts
- Provide budget justification for each expense
- Include up to 15% indirect costs (IDC) for budgets over $75,000

Upload proposal narrative
- Upload Proposal Narrative PDF (max 5000 words, double-spaced, 12-point font)
- Include: project description, significance, literature review, conceptual framework, research methods, and dissemination plans
- Add reference list after narrative (not counted in word limit)

Upload supporting documents
- Upload Project Timeline PDF (1 page, 12-point font) showing start/end dates and key milestones
- Upload Project Team document (max 800 words) describing roles and expertise
- If resubmission, upload 1-page explanation of revisions

Submit full proposal
- Submit full proposal through SmartSimple online portal
- Ensure all required sections are completed and uploaded
- Full Proposal Deadline: July 7, 2026, 12:00 PM Noon Central Time
Processing and Agreement
- Preproposals are reviewed to determine invitation to full proposal stage.
- All applicants receive light feedback on their preproposal.
- Applicants are notified if invited to submit a full proposal.
- Full proposals undergo peer review by field experts.
- Funding agreement required before disbursement of awarded funds.

- Preproposals are reviewed once a year; all applicants receive feedback.
- Research grants may include 15% indirect costs for budgets over $75,000.
