Overview of the Rangeland Sustainability Program (RSP) program
The Rangeland Sustainability Program (RSP) offers variable annual funding sourced from grazing rental revenues to support collaborative projects that promote the conservation and long-term sustainability of Alberta’s rangelands. Eligible activities include applied research, education and extension initiatives, ecological restoration, tool and strategy development for rangeland sustainability, and stewardship projects implemented by organizations such as academia, Indigenous communities, municipalities, and non-profits.
Eligible projects & activities
- Applied research to demonstrate adaptive rangeland management practices.
- Projects focused on carbon sequestration research, extension, and best management practices for rangelands.
- Ecological restoration of native grasslands impacted by forest or brush encroachment.
- Development or enhancement of tools, strategies, or practices that support rangeland sustainability.
- Education initiatives and training for livestock producers and industry stakeholders on rangeland stewardship.
Eligibility criteria of the Rangeland Sustainability Program (RSP) program
- The applicant must be an academic or educational institution, Indigenous community or organization, municipality, non-government organization registered under the Alberta Societies Act, or a non-profit organization.
- The project must support one or more of the Rangeland Sustainability Program's priority funding themes: extension and education, research, or stewardship (overcoming barriers).
- The project must align with the program's objectives of promoting rangeland conservation, sustainable management, and stewardship in Alberta.
- Collaboration with partners or stakeholders is encouraged, though individuals cannot apply alone.

- Non-profit organizations (including those not registered under the ASA but considered not-for-profit)
Who is not eligible
- Individual Albertans (individual applicants are not eligible, but may collaborate with eligible organizations).
Eligible expenses
- Costs related to extension, such as newsletter development, signage, brochures, web content creation and maintenance, and publication costs.
- Materials and supplies required for project implementation.
- Salaries and benefits for project staff hired specifically for the development or implementation of the project.
- Office, travel, and other expenses directly related to the project, including a proportional allocation for administration staff linked to the project.
- Eligible costs incurred within one year prior to the grant agreement signature, as outlined in the program eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria of the Rangeland Sustainability Program (RSP) program
- Identification of barriers to producers and practical solutions supporting rangeland stewardship and sustainability (21 points).
- Demonstration of tangible and measurable social, economic, and environmental benefits to rangeland sustainability (21 points).
- Generation of new knowledge, tools, or best practices that directly apply to rangeland sustainability management and address known risks or issues (13 points).
- Increase in awareness and knowledge to enhance stewardship and improve rangeland sustainability, considering a variety of audiences and effective information dissemination (13 points).
- Support for the development, uptake, and change in practices to improve rangeland sustainability, with evidence that high uptake will lead to improved practices (13 points).

Confirm organization and project eligibility
- Identify if your organization is eligible to apply (e.g., academia, Indigenous communities, municipalities, non-profits, NGOs under Alberta Societies Act)
- Confirm that your project aligns with program priorities and eligible project types

Develop an eligible project
- Develop a project that addresses one or more of the program’s priority funding themes (Extension and Education, Research, Stewardship)
- Ensure your project meets the eligibility criteria and identifies clear outcomes

Complete application form and collect documents
- Download and complete the Rangeland Sustainability Program Grant Application Form for 2025
- Gather all necessary supporting documents (e.g., project plan, budget estimates, collaborative agreements)

Review and prepare application for submission
- Review your application and supporting documents for completeness and accuracy
- Verify that all sections are filled and all required attachments are included

Submit application by the deadline
- Submit the completed application and all supporting documents by email to [email protected] before the deadline (September 17, 2025, 11:59 pm MST)
- Retain a copy of your submission and confirmation of receipt

Await results of application review
- Wait for written notification of the decision, expected by March 31
- Respond promptly to any requests for additional information if contacted by the program
Additional information
- The program's budget varies annually and is contingent upon grazing rental revenue.
- Application decisions will be communicated to all applicants by March 31 following the application deadline.
- Grant recipients are required to submit annual reports as well as a final report detailing project status and expenditures.
- Collaboration and partnerships between organizations are considered by the review committee but are not part of the formal scoring criteria.
