Planning Grants — Winter 2012 Competition

Who is eligible?

• The Nominated Principal Applicant may be an independent researcher, knowledge user, trainee, supervisor, or an activity/event coordinator affiliated with a Canadian non-governmental not-for-profit organization, and/or a community leader.
• The Nominated Principal Applicant must be affiliated with Canadian post-secondary institutions and affiliated institutions including hospitals and research institutes, Canadian non-governmental not-for-profit organizations with an explicit health research or knowledge translation mandate, or Canadian non-federal government departments or agencies, including regional health authorities, when their own programs do not fund the activity.

Who is not eligible

• Applicants seeking additional funding for an activity or event that has already been funded by CIHR.
• Multiple applications for the same activity or event, whether submitted by the same or a different Nominated Principal Applicant.

Eligible expenses

• Costs associated with planning, publication, translation, and dissemination.
• Fees or honoraria for preparing background documents, including environmental scans, market reports, and analysis.
• Travel and accommodation for participants.
• Meeting rooms and associated meeting costs, hospitality costs, and modest honoraria up to $500 CAD for each guest lecturer.
• Release time funding to replace part of the salary of a knowledge user to allow participation in the project.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

• Purchase or maintenance of equipment.
• Operating costs of research projects.
• Randomized controlled trials.
• Pilot testing or the generation of new knowledge.
• Activities related to meeting or event planning.

• Clarity and alignment of the proposed objectives and scope with the objectives of this funding opportunity.
• Likely impact of the anticipated outcomes.
• Inclusion of relevant stakeholders and sectors, and potential to catalyze new initiatives and collaborations.
• Appropriateness and adequacy of the proposed knowledge exchange or dissemination plans, project approach, team credentials, and budget justification.
• Applications that receive a rating below 3.5 will not be funded.

• Review results include a ranking list, ratings, and recommendations for funding decisions.

• Remaining applications are funded from the current funding opportunity from the top down as budgets allow.
• Successful applicants are informed of any special financial requirements before funds are released or when they receive the Authorization for Funding document, and the Nominated Principal Applicant must submit a final report and participate in monitoring, review, and evaluation activities.
