  • Trainees and Indigenous organizations, where eligible under the selected pool

Who is not eligible

  • Local activities open only to a single institution, where stated by the pool
  • Recurring meetings and events, where stated by the pool
  • Trainees as NPA in the Healthy Cities Research Initiative workshop pool
  • Knowledge users as NPA in the Healthy Cities Research Initiative workshop pool
  • Federal government employees, unless permitted under CIHR policy

Eligible expenses

  • Planning, publication, translation, and dissemination costs
  • Background documents such as environmental scans or market analyses
  • Travel and accommodation for participants
  • Meeting rooms, audiovisual equipment, and videoconferencing
  • Hospitality, modest honoraria, release time, and community engagement costs

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Direct costs of research, including pilot projects and feasibility studies
  • Principal and co-investigator salaries
  • Research equipment

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare your application
    • Review the funding opportunity, sponsor description, and specific instructions.
    • Complete the required CV format for each participant.
    • Prepare the activity description and budget information.
  • Step 2: Complete participant requirements
    • Create or validate a ResearchNet account and CIHR PIN.
    • Ensure all participants complete the Self-identification Questionnaire.
    • Upload the required training certificate and any mandatory attachments.
  • Step 3: Enter application information in ResearchNet
    • Identify participants and enter proposal details.
    • Upload the activity description, budget module, and supporting documents.
    • Select the competition and the single relevant Institute or Initiative.
  • Step 4: Obtain approvals and submit
    • Complete signature pages where required.
    • Obtain institutional approval, if applicable.
    • Submit the application through ResearchNet before the deadline.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications first undergo a relevance review by the selected Institute or Initiative.
  • Relevant applications are assessed against the evaluation criteria and must meet the threshold of excellence.
  • Eligible applications that pass review may enter a random selection process in some pools.
  • Funding decisions are made up to available funds, and successful applicants are published by CIHR.
  • A Final Report is required after the funded activity.

  • Applications are reviewed first for relevance to the selected Institute or Initiative.
  • Only the first selected Institute or Initiative in the application will be considered.
  • Successful applicants must submit a Final Report to CIHR.
  • CIHR may use applicant personal information for program design, results measurement, and reporting.
