Who is eligible?

  • Independent researchers affiliated with Canadian postsecondary institutions
  • Knowledge users affiliated with eligible Canadian institutions
  • Indigenous non-governmental organizations in Canada
  • Canadian non-governmental organizations with a research or knowledge translation mandate

Who is not eligible

  • Applicants without a substantive role in Canada for the grant term
  • Organizations that are not authorized to administer CIHR funds
  • Projects without a substantial focus on type 1 diabetes for JDRF support

Eligible expenses

  • Translation and preparation of public-facing materials
  • Knowledge mobilization, communication, and collaboration activities
  • Patient partner compensation
  • Indigenous community engagement costs and honoraria
  • Travel, accommodation, and related costs for the required workshop

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Costs normally covered by the health care, education, or criminal justice systems
  • Implementation of existing interventions
  • Projects focused on the treatment of already diagnosed diabetes complications
  • Original research to develop or pilot new interventions without sufficient evidence

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are first screened through a relevance review against the program objectives and partner priorities.
  • Ineligible or non-relevant applications are withdrawn from the competition.
  • Eligible applications undergo peer review under CIHR review guidelines.
  • Funding is awarded to the top-ranked applications in each pool, then in rank order in the general pool.
  • Successful applicants are named publicly on the CIHR website.
