Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • New investigators in child health research
  • Principal investigators and, where applicable, co-principal investigators
  • Researchers affiliated with a Canadian eligible institution

Who is not eligible

  • Trainees, including fellows and doctoral candidates, as principal investigators
  • Applicants without affiliation to an eligible institution
  • Applicants who already hold an active SickKids Foundation grant
  • Projects that mainly benefit children outside Canada
  • Researchers proposing work that is already funded

Eligible expenses

  • Research costs such as materials, services, staff salaries, supplies, resources, and animals
  • Knowledge translation or dissemination activities
  • Travel related to the research project
  • Equipment purchase or rental, including computers

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Institutional overhead and indirect costs
  • Projects with limited relevance to children’s health
  • Projects that primarily benefit children outside Canada
  • Projects that are already funded elsewhere

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed through expert scientific peer review.
  • The Grant Review Committee assesses scientific merit and relevance to child and youth health.
  • Funding decisions are made in rank order and then finalized by SickKids Foundation’s Audit and Finance sub-committee.
  • Successful applicants are published on the CIHR website.
  • A grant agreement must be signed, and reporting obligations apply during the funding period.

  • The competition is highly competitive and has a limited funding envelope.
