Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Ontario residents in financial need.
  • People who are 18 years of age or older and have status in Canada.
  • People who are 16 or 17 years of age under special circumstances only.
  • Temporary caregivers of children under 18 who are not living with their parents.

Eligible expenses

  • Basic needs and shelter expenses
  • Drug and dental coverage
  • Health benefits for eligible family members
  • Approved travel for medical purposes

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Travel for purposes other than approved medical travel on the medical mileage reimbursement form

How to apply

  • Apply online or by telephone.

Processing and Agreement

  • You can request an internal review within 30 calendar days after receipt of the decision.
  • The office will complete the internal review within 10 days of your request and notify you of the result.
  • If you disagree with the internal review, you can appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal within 30 days of the internal review decision.
  • You cannot file the appeal unless you have asked for an internal review.

  • MyBenefits can be used to continue an Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program application, report changes, or get information about your social assistance case.
  • Ontario Works financial assistance can be directly deposited into your bank account instead of being mailed by cheque.
