Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Livestock owners
  • Poultry producers
  • Beekeepers
  • Corporations, partnerships, and unincorporated associations

Who is not eligible

  • Claims involving damage caused by dogs
  • Applicants without the required identification information
  • Claims for livestock or poultry that were already sick or dead

Eligible expenses

  • Veterinary care for injured livestock, up to fair market value
  • Medication costs tied to veterinary treatment

  • Claims involving non-eligible wildlife species
  • Claims where livestock or poultry were already sick or dead
  • Claims without required identification or supporting information
  • Damage caused by dogs

How to apply

  • Step 1: Report the incident within 48 hours
    • Contact the municipality or OMAFRA, depending on location
    • Preserve the site and carcass or damaged beehive equipment
    • Take photos and gather evidence
  • Step 2: Investigation and application completion
    • The investigator visits the site and documents the damage
    • The owner reviews and signs the application
    • Additional evidence must be provided within seven business days if applicable
  • Step 3: Submission and decision
    • The municipality submits the completed application to OMAFRA
    • OMAFRA reviews the claim and issues a decision
    • Appeals may be filed within 20 business days

Processing and Agreement

  • The municipality reviews the application for completeness before submission
  • OMAFRA assesses eligibility, evidence, reasonable care, and compensation value
  • A written decision is issued within 30 business days of a complete application
  • Applicants may appeal within 20 business days of the decision
  • Approved payments are made through the municipality, or directly in some cases

Additional information

  • Compensation is taxable income.
  • A Statement of Farm Support Payments (AGR-1) is issued to recipients.
  • An appeal fee of $25 applies and may be refunded in some cases.
