Overview

The OAC — Literature – French-language projects grant provides up to $12,000 to support the vitality of the Francophone literary sector in Ontario. The program funds the creation of new works, oral literature projects, and initiatives that promote the dissemination and visibility of French-language literature.

Financing terms and conditions

  • Maximum grant amount for book-length creation projects: $12,000.
  • Maximum grant amount for oral literature creation/recording projects: $8,000.
  • Maximum grant amount for presentation/outreach projects: $12,000.
  • The grant awarded may be less than the amount requested due to limited available funds and high demand.

Activities funded

  • Creation or completion of a book-length literary work in French.
  • Creation or recording of oral literature works, such as literary performances or storytelling, for public presentation or recording.
  • Projects that promote, present, or enhance the vitality of the French-language literary sector in Ontario, including collaborative writing projects, public presentations, and networking events among professionals.

Eligibility

  • For "Presentation/Outreach" category: The applicant must be a non-profit ad hoc group or collective of professional literary artists, with at least 50% of members residing in Ontario.
  • For "Presentation/Outreach" category: Non-profit organizations with a head office in Ontario are eligible.
  • For "Presentation/Outreach" category: Book and periodical publishers with a head office in Ontario are eligible, if organized as a non-profit entity with their main office in Ontario.
  • All application materials and the proposed project must be in French and support the vitality of Ontario’s Francophone literary sector.

Who is eligible?

  • French-language professional literary artists based in Ontario
  • French-language professional oral literature artists based in Ontario
  • Ad hoc groups and non-profit collectives of professional literary artists (with at least 50% of members residing in Ontario)
  • Non-profit organizations with a head office in Ontario
  • Book and periodical publishers with a head office in Ontario

Who is not eligible

  • Municipalities, colleges, and universities.
  • For-profit corporations.
  • Organizations receiving operating funding from the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) under the Francophone Arts Service Organizations – Operating program.

Eligible expenses

  • Manuscript revision or evaluation services (up to 50% of the grant amount).
  • Audio or audiovisual recording costs (creation or recording of literary works, including adaptations for public performance and electronic dissemination).
  • Compilation of works (for established Indigenous storytellers in Ontario).
  • Childcare or dependent care expenses required for project participation (distinct from regular ongoing care).
  • Accessibility expenses to make the project accessible to deaf or disabled participants or audiences (excluding the applicant).

  • Artistic merit and impact of the proposed project.
  • Relevance and innovation, particularly for Presentation/Visibility projects (priority given to innovative projects distinct from ongoing activities).
  • Feasibility and clarity of the project, including planning and execution.
  • Potential to enhance the vitality and visibility of the French-language literary sector in Ontario.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Review Program GuidelinesRead the "Guide des programmes de projets du CAO" to understand the program’s basic eligibility criteria and restrictions.
  • Consult the application guides and evaluation guides for detailed instructions and assessment criteria.
  • Step 2: Create or Update Profile on NovaRegister or update your profile in Nova, the Ontario Arts Council’s online grant application system.
  • Step 3: Prepare Your Application DocumentsPrepare a project description, responding to all required questions in the application form.
  • Develop a detailed budget for your proposed project.
  • Gather artistic examples relevant to your category (e.g., excerpts of works-in-progress, audio/video samples for oral literature, supporting materials such as promotional documents if applicable).
  • Collect supporting documents demonstrating your artistic background or professional experience relevant to the grant category.
  • Step 4: Complete Online ApplicationAccess the application form in Nova (available approximately two months before the deadline).
  • Fill in all required fields with accurate information about your project and team, where applicable.
  • Upload examples of your artistic work and supporting documents as required for your project category.
  • Step 5: Submit ApplicationSubmit your completed application through Nova before the stated deadline.
  • Step 6: Await ResultsMonitor your email and Nova account for the results, which are typically communicated about four and a half months after the application deadline.
  • Step 7: Final Reporting (if funded)Complete your funded project within two years of the results announcement.
  • Submit a final report through Nova, including a project description, financial summary, samples of completed work, and examples of recognition of funding per grant requirements.

Additional information

  • The online application form will be made available in the Nova portal approximately two months before the deadline.
  • Grant results are communicated approximately four and a half months after the submission deadline.
  • Grant recipients must acknowledge the support of the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario in promotional or project materials using official logos.
  • If the final report shows a surplus greater than $250, the excess may need to be reimbursed to the Ontario Arts Council.
