Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Canadian companies

  • Consortia led by a single Canadian-based applicant

Eligible expenses

  • Project costs incurred during the project

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • General corporate operating costs outside the defined project scope
  • Projects whose entire scope consists solely of studies or reports, including feasibility or FEED studies

Eligible geographic areas

  • Canadian-incorporated companies and Canadian-based projects are eligible. The company and project do not have to be located in British Columbia, but measurable impact in British Columbia is required and strong BC impact is prioritized.

Selection criteria

  • Strategic alignment with BC Hydro's Power Smart 2.0 targets and capacity and demand response priorities
  • Team strength and the ability to scale the solution
  • Technology viability, including a realistic development plan and regulatory compliance
  • Commercial viability and market validation, including evidence of market engagement such as letters of intent, paid pilots, or off-take agreements
  • Financial readiness, organizational capacity, and impact measurement

How to apply

  • Prepare a short written expression of interest, a 5-minute video, and a pitch deck if available
  • Submit the application through portal.northx.ca
  • If selected for Stage 2, enter into a confidentiality agreement
  • Submit a detailed proposal through NorthX's systems and processes

Processing and Agreement

  • Stage 1 includes a preliminary review to confirm eligibility against program requirements.
  • Only a limited number of proposals are invited to execute a confidentiality agreement and proceed to Stage 2.
  • Stage 2 includes detailed proposal review, due diligence, third-party assessments, and engagements with the NorthX project review team.
  • Successful project proposals move to Stage 3 for final due diligence.
  • Successful project proponents work with NorthX to develop and agree on a project funding agreement that sets out obligations, milestones for fund release, and reporting requirements.

Additional information

  • Delivered with BC Hydro. EOIs opened September 21, 2026. First cohort EOI deadline: October 30, 2026 at 5 pm Pacific. Invited detailed proposals: November 30, 2026 at 5 pm Pacific. Successful applicants notified January 30, 2027. Continuous EOIs after October 30 remain eligible for the next funding decision window in Q1 2027, subject to available funding.
