Selection criteria
- Awards are based solely on scientific merit.
- Consideration is given to the potential to translate research into extramural funding applications, additional pre-clinical studies, and clinical trials.
- The innovation of the proposal and its alignment with the goals of the grant program are considered.
- Protocol design, objectiveness of parameters measured, and statistical evaluation proposed are reviewed.
- Strong preference is given to researchers holding a faculty-level appointment or senior scientific position at an academic or non-profit institution or foundation, unless indicated in the RFP.

Processing and Agreement
- Letters of intent are reviewed by NORD reviewers, and finalists are invited to submit full proposals.
- Requests for full proposals will be issued via email in late December 2025.
- Award announcements will be made via email and posted on NORD’s website in May 2026.
- Funding begins after all necessary documents, such as IRB forms, patient consent forms, and signed grant agreements, have been received by NORD; if human or animal subjects are involved, copies of governance documents are required from each site before payment can be issued, and compliance with international funding regulations must be confirmed when applicable.
- Awarded investigators must submit financial and scientific progress reports every six months.

- Clinical drug trials must meet requirements established by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
- International applicants are responsible for all document translations.
- Letters of support from an individual advocate (e.g., patient, care partner) or patient advocacy group in this disease space are optional but encouraged.
