Overview

The National Acadian Day funding program provides up to $5,000 to support community-based events promoting Acadian heritage and culture on or around August 15. Eligible activities must be free, open to the public, and celebrate the contribution of Acadians to Canada’s cultural diversity.

Financing terms and conditions

  • The maximum amount that can be requested for organizing a National Acadian Day community celebration is $5,000.
  • The total financial assistance received from all government sources must not exceed 100% of total eligible project-related costs.
  • Administrative costs are eligible, but cannot exceed 15% of the total contribution.

  • Organizing community celebrations for National Acadian Day held on August 15 or the weekend before or after.
  • Public events that celebrate and promote Acadian heritage, culture, and history.
  • Activities open to the public and widely promoted in the community to encourage participation and awareness.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a Canadian not-for-profit organization, a Canadian business corporation with non-commercial projects, a Canadian educational institution, a Canadian municipal government or other municipal, provincial/territorial institution, or an Indigenous Peoples institution or organization.
  • The project must be held on August 15 or the weekend before or after.
  • The event must be free of charge and open to the public, with active promotion as a public event.

Who is eligible?

  • Canadian not-for-profit organizations
  • Canadian business corporations (for non-commercial projects)
  • Canadian educational institutions
  • Canadian municipal governments or other municipal institutions
  • Indigenous institutions or organizations (including Inuit, Métis, Status and Non-Status peoples)
  • Local band councils, tribal councils, or other local Indigenous governments or organizations (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis)

Who is not eligible

  • Federal, provincial, and territorial government entities.

Eligible expenses

  • Promotional and communications expenses related to the event.
  • Costs for entertainment, supplies, and equipment rental.
  • Expenses for traditional food served at the celebration.
  • Fireworks and light show costs.
  • Administrative costs directly related to the project, including salaries, benefits, professional service fees, bank charges, and utilities (up to 15% of the total contribution).
  • Reasonable travel and hospitality expenses within Canada, not exceeding government business travel rates.

  • Organizations located anywhere in Canada.

  • Alignment with the objectives and designated date of the Program.
  • Use of Canadian symbols and partnerships within the project.
  • Accessibility of the event location and ability to engage a broad, diverse audience.

  • Completeness and detail of the application, including a balanced and realistic budget.

  • Attach all required forms and supporting documents to your application package
  • Verify that all sections are complete and accurate

  • Submit your completed application package by email to canada5k@pch.gc.ca
  • Ensure submission is before 11:59 p.m. local time on the deadline date

Await acknowledgment and results

  • Wait for confirmation of receipt from the Department of Canadian Heritage (within two weeks)
  • Monitor your email for further communications regarding your application status

Additional information

  • Applicants must keep all records and documentation related to the funded project for five years to support possible audits or program evaluations.
  • Public acknowledgement of Government of Canada support in both English and French is required for all funded projects' communications and promotion.
  • Submitting false or unsupported information may result in repayment of funds and ineligibility for future funding for at least two years.
  • Organizations must demonstrate compliance with anti-racism, workplace well-being, and official languages requirements as outlined in program guidelines.
