Overview

The Métis Entrepreneurs’ Assistance Program (MEAP) provides non-repayable grant funding for up to 30% of total project costs to support the start-up or expansion of Métis-owned businesses in Alberta. Eligible activities include business creation or expansion projects that generate full-time employment and become the applicant’s main source of income.

Activities funded

  • Start-up of a new business in Alberta by a Métis individual.
  • Expansion of an existing business operated by a Métis individual in Alberta.
Examples of admissible projects:

Installing on-site solar panels for small-scale food processor

Developing digital platform to facilitate community organization events
$ 90,000
Upgrading bakery production equipment for energy efficiency

Eligibility

  • The business must be located in Alberta.
  • The applicant must be the majority owner of the business (at least 51% ownership).
  • The applicant must be involved in the operations of the business and have relevant industry experience (minimum six months to one year).
  • The project must be a start-up or an expansion leading to full-time employment and serve as the applicant's main source of income.
  • The applicant must hold valid Métis identification and have resided in Alberta for at least six months.

Who is eligible?

  • Start-ups or expanding businesses owned by Métis individuals in Alberta

Who is not eligible

  • Businesses involved in passive investments, property, houses, or buildings.
  • Companies operating in the cannabis or tobacco industries.
  • Businesses whose main activity is the sale of alcohol or gambling products.
  • Companies not located in Alberta.
  • Individuals with Indian Status (Status individuals) must apply through different programs and are not eligible for this grant.

  • Owners in businesses with multiple proprietors must each submit a separate application form.
  • If two years have passed since the last grant was received, applicants may reapply.
