Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Incorporated non-profit organizations.
  • Unincorporated collectives operating on a not-for-profit basis.
  • Independent non-profit literary or arts magazines.

Who is not eligible

  • Individuals.
  • Organizations or collectives receiving TAC operating funding.
  • Schools in Ontario’s public or private education system.
  • Educational or religious institutions without a clear separation of arts activities.
  • Magazines focused on lifestyle, scholarly content, political reportage, commercial promotion, religion, spirituality, or student/university affiliation.

Eligible expenses

  • Artistic fees and contributors fees
  • Production and technical costs
  • Marketing and publicity costs
  • Event documentation expenses
  • Administrative costs
  • Editorial, production, distribution, and promotion costs for magazines

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Projects started or completed before results are announced.
  • Ongoing operating costs, including permanent staff salaries and general administration.
  • Equipment purchases, capital projects, fundraising, deficit reduction, archiving, awards, film projects, competitive projects, and art therapy.
  • Activities outside the City of Toronto, including touring, travel, and accommodations.
  • Book publishing and excluded magazine types such as lifestyle, scholarly, political reportage, commercial, religious, spiritual, student-run, or university-affiliated magazines.

Selection criteria

  • Artistic merit and strength of artistic goals.
  • Contribution to the development of literary arts in Toronto.
  • Contribution to the development of the applicant organization, collective, or artists.
  • Public impact and effectiveness of outreach, marketing, distribution, or audience development.
  • Financial viability and ability to carry out the project.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare application materials
    • Complete the project description, budget information, and support material.
    • Include resumes for key artists and brief bios for other contributors.
  • Step 2: Register on TAC Grants Online
    • Create or use an account on the TAC online granting portal.
  • Step 3: Submit the application online
    • Upload the application and required materials through TAC Grants Online.
    • Submit before 11:59 pm on the deadline date.
    • Applications are not accepted by any other method.
  • Step 4: Receive confirmation and results
    • Watch for a confirmation email after submission.
    • Check TAC Grants Online and email for the results notice.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by a peer panel from the literary community.
  • Projects are assessed on artistic merit, contribution to Toronto literary arts, development impact, public impact, and financial viability.
  • Applicants are notified by email and through TAC Grants Online, usually within four months of the deadline.
  • Successful applicants must sign a Letter of Understanding before funding is released.
  • Final reports are required after project completion.

Additional information

  • Projects involving Deaf artists and artists with disabilities may be eligible for an additional Accessibility Grant.
  • Application support funds may be available for Deaf applicants and applicants with disabilities.
  • Applicants receive results by email and through TAC Grants Online.
  • Successful applicants must sign a Letter of Understanding before funding is released.
