Overview
Je relève le défi vert offers one of four grants of $5,000 to street-front businesses in Villeray that propose and implement concrete eco-responsible or social impact projects. Eligible activities include waste reduction, reuse or consignment systems, responsible sourcing, energy-efficient or sustainable renovations, and community or environmental initiatives.
Activities funded
- Projects that reduce waste generated by the business, such as redesigning operations to limit disposables and improve recycling.
- Initiatives that promote reuse, including systems for reusable containers, packaging or materials, or shared bulk/return systems with other businesses.
- Responsible sourcing projects, such as prioritizing local or certified sustainable suppliers, or adopting a formal responsible purchasing policy.
- Improvements to premises that enhance environmental performance, including better lighting, energy efficiency measures or renovations using recycled or durable materials.
- Social impact initiatives, such as donation programs, partnerships with community organizations, or environmental and educational activities for customers.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- The business must be incorporated as a corporation, cooperative or non-profit organization.
- The business must operate a physical storefront (retail store, restaurant or café).
- The establishment must be located in the Villeray borough.
- The project must propose concrete eco-responsible or social impact actions and the business must agree to ongoing follow-up during the project.
Who is eligible?
- Retail businesses with street frontage located in the Villeray borough.
- Service companies with a commercial space accessible to the public in Villeray.
- Restaurants with dining rooms or service counters in the Villeray borough.
- Cafés located within the territory of Villeray.
- Incorporated companies, cooperatives, or non-profit organizations operating a retail business, service, restaurant, or café in Villeray.
Who is not eligible
- Businesses that are part of a chain or banner, or that operate under a franchise or licence.
- Businesses owned by a Crown corporation (state-owned enterprise).
- Businesses whose main activity is erotic in nature.
- Businesses whose main activity is political.
- Businesses whose main activity is religious.
Eligible expenses
- Costs related to reducing waste (e.g., systems to cut down on waste generation).
- Expenses for reusable containers or materials and systems for deposit, bulk or reuse with other businesses.
- Costs for responsible sourcing, such as purchasing from local or certified sustainable suppliers and implementing responsible purchasing policies.
- Investments to improve premises, including upgrading lighting and energy efficiency, and using recycled or durable materials in renovations.
- Expenses for social initiatives, including donation programs, collaborations with community organizations, and environmental or educational activities for customers.

- Businesses located in the Villeray borough of Montréal (Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension), Quebec.
Selection criteria
- Presentation of concrete actions in sustainable development or social impact.
- Ability of the project to demonstrate real eco-responsible actions through tangible evidence (invoices, photos, contracts, etc.).

Verify eligibility criteria
- Confirm that your business is a street-front retail store, restaurant or café located in the Villeray borough
- Ensure your business is incorporated as a corporation, cooperative or non-profit organization
- Verify that you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Make sure your business activity and project are not listed among the ineligible enterprises and projects
- Confirm your willingness to improve your practices and accept project follow-up requirements

Define your sustainable project
- Identify one or more eco-responsible or social actions suited to your business reality
- Ensure your actions relate to sustainable development or social impact (environmental or social initiatives)
- Consider examples such as waste reduction, responsible sourcing, energy efficiency, or social initiatives
- Make sure planned actions are not already completed or already financed before registration

Position your project category
- Confirm that your business falls into one of the two categories: retail and services, or restaurant
- Prepare to have your project evaluated according to the appropriate category of activity
- Adjust the description of your actions so they clearly fit your main line of business

Complete the application form
- Obtain and access the official application form for the “Je relève le défi vert” contest
- Fill in all required sections of the form with accurate information about your business
- Describe your planned eco-responsible or social actions and expected impacts
- Indicate your agreement to project follow-up and to sharing your participation in communications, if applicable

Submit your application
- Submit your completed application form before the deadline of October 30, 2025
- Ensure the form is sent through the indicated channel linked to the online registration access
- Keep a copy of your submitted application and any confirmation of receipt

Implement actions and provide proof
- If selected and after the contest, implement the eco-responsible or social actions described in your application
- Collect tangible proof of the actions carried out (invoices, photos, contracts, etc.)
- Provide the requested evidence to the organizers as part of the project follow-up
Additional information
- Four grants of $5,000 each are available, funded by Desjardins (Caisses du Centre-nord de Montréal and Caisse Cœur-de-l’île).
- The initiative is organized by PME MTL Centre-Est, in collaboration with PME MTL Centre-Ouest.
- Participants must agree to ongoing follow-up throughout the project and to being mentioned in communications about the initiative, where applicable.
- At the end of the contest, participating businesses must provide tangible proof of the actions implemented (e.g. invoices, photos, contracts).
