Provides prizes of up to CAD $30,000 to advance novel food production technologies for long-duration space missions. Supports Phase 1 concept activities focused on maximizing safe, nutritious, palatable food output with minimal inputs and waste, with potential benefits on Earth.
Activities funded
- Developing novel food production technologies, systems, and/or approaches for long-duration space missions.
- Designing concepts to help fill food gaps for a three-year round-trip mission with no resupply for a four-person crew.
- Creating solutions that maximize food output with minimal inputs and minimal waste.
- Developing a variety of palatable, nutritious, and safe foods requiring little crew processing time.
- Designing food production concepts with potential to improve food accessibility on Earth, including in urban centres and remote or harsh environments.

- Submit a Phase 1 concept application proposing a novel food production technology, system, or approach.
- The proposed solution must aim to maximize safe, nutritious, and palatable food output with minimal inputs and minimal waste.
- The concept must address food production needs for long-duration space missions (three-year round-trip, no resupply) for a four-person crew.
- The solution must have potential to improve food accessibility on Earth (including urban centres and remote or harsh environments).
