Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Only one qualifying owner can claim the home owner grant for a property each year
  • A person with a disability can apply for the higher additional grant
  • The spouse or relative of a person with a disability who lives with them can apply for the higher additional grant
  • If you and your spouse are separated and living apart in different residences, you may each claim a home owner grant for your principal residences respectively if other eligibility requirements are met
  • Anyone with your permission can apply on your behalf

Who is not eligible

  • Your financial institution will not apply for the home owner grant on your behalf
  • If you and your spouse live in different residences, you cannot both claim a grant for each of your individual properties

How to apply

  • Apply online through the eTaxBC home owner grant portal
  • Apply by phone using the self-service phone system
  • Visit a Service BC location if you do not have a computer or access to the internet

Processing and Agreement

  • After you apply, the ministry may ask for additional documentation to support your application
  • Grant applications are audited for up to 7 years to make sure taxpayers are eligible for the grants they receive
  • If requested, you can upload additional documents through the secure eTaxBC portal or mail them to Home Owner Grant Administration in Victoria, BC V8W 9R7
  • After you apply, you can check your application status online using your confirmation number or case ID
