Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Individuals residing in Alberta
  • Individuals with a permanent Alberta address
  • Registered organizations in Alberta
  • Non-profit organizations, corporations, municipalities, churches, schools, First Nations, and Métis Settlements

Who is not eligible

  • Government of Alberta departments
  • Friends organizations linked to historic sites or interpretive centres owned or operated by the Government of Alberta

Eligible expenses

  • Research activities
  • Writing and editing of the resulting manuscript, script, or report
  • Non-local travel for the researcher, including meals, mileage, and accommodations
  • Materials and supplies
  • Cultural protocol costs such as gifts to Elders and knowledge keepers and sharing circles

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Costs already incurred before the application was submitted
  • Books, equipment, cameras, computers, tools, and machinery
  • Fundraising, administration, planning, and grant-writing activities
  • Utilities, office space, and office equipment use not directly tied to the project
  • Contingency costs and subsistence or living expenses

How to apply

  • Step 1: Review guidelines and application form
    • Read the program guidelines before completing the application.
    • Use the current application form.
  • Step 2: Prepare the application
    • Complete the application form.
    • Gather the required supporting documents.
    • Prepare the research plan and budget.
  • Step 3: Submit the application
    • Email the application and supporting documents, or
    • Drop off, mail, or send by courier to the program office in Edmonton.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by program staff and assessed against program factors.
  • Staff make funding recommendations to the Minister.
  • The Minister makes the final funding decision.
  • Applicants are generally notified in May or June.
  • Successful applicants must follow the terms in the guidelines, application form, and award letter.

  • The grant is discontinued and no longer accepting applications.
  • Applicants are encouraged to consult the current program guidelines before applying.
  • Projects involving Indigenous content or participants should explain community involvement.
  • Grant recipients must publicly acknowledge Government of Alberta support.
